What is a quantity surveyor (QS)? What do they do?

A Quantity Surveyor (QS) is a vital part of any building project and is responsible for measuring the value of construction projects from concept to completion.

Measure and estimate the cost of resources for construction projects and manage the commercial (financial and contractual) aspects of all building and infrastructure projects.

How do QS’s provide value add for their clients?

a) Quantifying and costing the construction of building and engineering works for feasibility studies.

b) Preparing tenders and tender documentation.

c) Managing contract cost from end to end through to the final account.

d) Valuing for insurance and/or asset life planning purposes, rental reviews, maintenance and tax schedules.

As a general guideline, service and consultancy fees range from $150 to $200 hour + GST.

d) Timely replies to questions and decision making.

What is a QS sometimes referred to?

As an Estimator, Cost Engineer, Cost Manager, Engineer to Contract, Cost Analyst, Project Coordinator, Project Controller and Cost Planner.
